Where the stories come from - a look at my writing process

I've talked about this before, but it comes up time and again. People always want to know where the stories I write come from. What's interesting is the people you meet who try to tell you they have a great idea for a story. Hey, you should write about - XYZ. That would be a great book! I always appreciate that. My own father was a consistent source. In fact, from time to time, those suggestions are good enough to get stored away in my brain somewhere or a notebook. But for t

I am very pleased to announce that the audiobook version of my bestselling 2017 psychological thriller Storyland is now available! Named as a best of 2017 by book bloggers and a semi-finalist in the Soon to be Famous Author Illinois contest, this is an intense and terrifying psychological thriller about repressed memories, childhood, and the nightmares which lurk withing our own mind. Storyland: Now a semi-finalist

Last year I was invited by the wonderful Kara Kohn at the Plainfield Public Library here in Illinois to a local author event. I went there to sell and sign books and then participate in a discussion with other Illinois-based authors. It was a horrible day weather-wise, but a great time for those of us who were there. The library told us about all of these great resources the library and other Illinois libraries offered us local, independent authors to help get our books out t

On Writing: about the dark stuff

My new novel Storyland (available for pre-order now in print & Kindle formats- FYI) delves into some of the darkest territory I have yet to write about. I can't give too much away without giving away the ending, of course, but I can tell you a little. Our narrator, a guy named Ned, wakes up one day to find out his friend from childhood, Martin Brace, has brutally butchered four people who were camping in the woods - leaving just a young boy alive. This sends Ned down some ver

    When memory plays tricks

Memory is a weird thing. That is a topic explored at length in my new psychological suspense novel Storyland. In fact, its key to the entire plot. What do you think? Is your memory solid or does it play tricks with you? There was a school of thought for a long time that eye witnesses were the best source of evidence in a crime. These days, cops know that this is far from the truth. Rather than being a tablet written in stone, for most of us, our memories are really like clay.

Suspense author Bryan Alaspa releases novel “too dark” for traditional publishers

Chicago suspense writer Bryan Alaspa continues to do things the hard way, announcing via his website and social media that he will be publishing his new psychological thriller novel Storyland under his own publishing label on Halloween, 2017. The reason? The feedback he got from publishing agents and traditional publishers said the novel was “too dark”, “disturbing” and “gritty” for them. “It was weird,” says the author, “several of them got back to me and the ones who provid
