If you're a horror fan and haven't yet dived into the world of the TV show Evil, you're missing out on one of the most intriguing and chilling series in recent years. Evil masterfully blends psychological horror, supernatural elements, and thought-provoking storylines to create a viewing experience that's both terrifying and intellectually stimulating. Here’s why Evil should be at the top of your must-watch list.
You can find all seasons on Paramount+ and the first couple of seasons on Netflix. They just finished the 4th season and, dammit, if we can't all rally around this terrific show and get it picked up by another streamer, I don't know what we can rally around. It was, and is, quite simply one of the best shows on TV.
A Fresh Take on Horror
Evil stands out from the crowded field of horror TV shows by taking a unique approach to the genre. Instead of relying solely on jump scares or gore, the show delves into the deeper, more unsettling aspects of what it means to confront true evil. Whether it's demonic possessions, sinister conspiracies, or the blurred lines between science and religion, Evil explores the unknown in ways that challenge your perceptions and leave you questioning what you believe.
The premise is simple. Mike Colter, Katja Herbers and Aasif Mandvi are assessors working for the Catholic church. Colter plays David, who is a priest, and a believer. Herbers plays Kristen, who is a psychologist and more agnostic. Finally, Mandvi plays Ben, who was raised Muslim but is now a scientist and not a believer. They look into each case presented to them to determine if there is a miracle or supernatural explanation, if an exorcist is needed, or if it's all a scam.
Complex Characters with Depth
At the heart of Evil is its trio of protagonists: forensic psychologist Kristen Bouchard (Katja Herbers), priest-in-training David Acosta (Mike Colter), and tech expert Ben Shakir (Aasif Mandvi). These characters are not just archetypes; they are fully realized individuals with their own struggles, beliefs, and motivations. Kristen grapples with the skepticism of science versus the mysteries of the supernatural, David battles his faith and temptation, and Ben brings a skeptical, tech-savvy perspective to their investigations. Their interactions and growth over the series add layers of depth to the narrative, making the show as much about their personal journeys as it is about the horrors they face.
Then, as a continuing storyline, there is Michael Emerson playing Leland Townsend who loves evil, encourages and does, in fact, work for a large global conglomerate that is literary run by Satan. Their entire purpose is to bring about the birth of the Antichrist and the beginning of the end of the world.
A Perfect Blend of Horror and Psychology and Humor
One of the most compelling aspects of Evil is its exploration of the psychological underpinnings of fear. The show doesn’t just present supernatural phenomena; it dissects them, offering both scientific and spiritual explanations. This duality keeps viewers on their toes, constantly questioning what is real and what is imagined. The psychological tension is palpable, making even the most mundane situations feel eerie and foreboding. If you enjoy horror that makes you think as much as it makes you squirm, Evil is the perfect show for you.
Here's the other thing, the entire series contains a wicked sense of humor. I mean, there are times when this show is laugh-out-loud funny, even as demons and devils are dancing across the screen.
Engaging Storylines with Real-World Relevance
Evil doesn’t shy away from tackling real-world issues, often weaving them into its narrative in ways that feel both relevant and terrifying. The show touches on themes such as the influence of social media, the rise of conspiracy theories, and the dark side of human nature. By grounding its supernatural elements in contemporary issues, Evil creates a sense of realism that heightens the horror. It’s not just about ghosts and demons; it’s about the evil that lurks
in everyday life.
There is a bit of a Black Mirror influence here, because often the cases involve modern technology that may, or may not, be drifting into the satanic. Apps, drones, robots, virtual reality and more are all tackled here.
Unpredictable Twists and Turns
One of the joys of watching Evil is never knowing what to expect. The show is full of twists that keep you guessing, and it doesn’t follow the predictable paths that many horror series do. Just when you think you’ve figured out what’s going on, Evil throws a curveball that changes everything. This unpredictability makes the show incredibly engaging, as you’re constantly trying to piece together the mystery along with the characters.
A Dark and Eerie Atmosphere
The show’s atmosphere is another standout feature. From its moody cinematography to its unsettling score, Evil excels at creating a sense of dread that permeates every scene. The settings, whether it’s a creepy old church or a suburban home, are meticulously crafted to enhance the tension. The show knows how to use silence and shadows to maximum effect, making it one of the most visually and sonically unsettling series on TV.
There are genuine scares here. Yes, it has a great core cast, and lots of humor, but there are also times when you'll be checking the darker corners of your room to ensure a demon isn't lurking there. Most of it done with practical effects, too. The demons you see on scream, for the most part, were people in costumes.
Critical Acclaim and Cult Following
Evil has garnered critical acclaim for its storytelling, performances, and unique approach to horror. It has also built a dedicated fanbase that appreciates its blend of horror, drama, and thought-provoking content. If you’re a horror fan who enjoys discovering hidden gems, Evil is a show that’s well worth your time.
This is why it is so sad there is currently no plan to go beyond season 4. There are so many more stories to tell. There is so much more evil for Evil to explore.
Conclusion: Evil is a Must-Watch for Horror Fans
In a genre that can sometimes feel formulaic, Evil brings something fresh and exciting to the table. It’s a show that challenges your mind as much as it scares you, offering a blend of psychological horror, supernatural intrigue, and real-world relevance that’s hard to find elsewhere. If you haven’t yet experienced the dark, twisted world of Evil, now is the perfect time to start. Trust me, you won’t regret it—just make sure to keep the lights on.
